Sonji Roi Clay (1946 – October 11, 2005)
Marriage Term: 1964 – 1966

  • Sonji was 23 when she met then Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr., who was 22, on July 3, 1964, while working as a cocktail waitress in Miami Beach, Florida.

  • Sonji & Clay met the same year he defeated Sonny Liston winning his first heavyweight championship on February 25, 1964.

  • Sonji lost her parents early in her childhood and had been living on her own working in nightclubs as a waitress. Sonji is also known to have done some modeling but no documented efforts have been discovered.

  • Sonji claims Cassius proposed to her the same night they met. The wedding occurred August 14, 1964, in Gary, Indiana

    Forty-one (41) days after they first met.

  • Irreconcilable differences due to conflicts of interest over Muslim customs eventually led to a divorce on January 10, 1966.

  • Sonji pursued a “brief” career in singing after the divorce and is believed to have recorded three (3) records, one of which is listed below. All three (3) are guessed to have ended up in the UK. In regards to the other two (2) no discoveries have been made by that of the author.

  • An interview of Sonji Roi Clay has also been discovered of her speaking meeting Cassius Clay.

  • Sonji Roi moved to Chicago, Illinois where she later died October 11, 2005, from heart failure or a heart attack. There has been no mention of her having any children.
